How do I join MAΣ?  Submit a request via our website:  www.MASigma.org.  You will be sent an email inviting you to our next Orientation which takes place three times each year:  February, May, and September.

​

Why is MAΣ a sorority?

  • Sororities represent an anchor for lifetime friendship/bonding

  • Sororities share the same principles that guide community service actions

  • Sororities have philanthropic visions and outputs

  • Sororities share group values

  • Sororities help to develop leadership

What is our mission?  To work as a united group of martial art women that empower, transform, and serve the communities where we live and interact to accelerate efforts to be self-sufficient, self-determined, and supported in reaching new heights.

​

How do we accomplish our mission?  Via community service initiatives (e.g., such as food and clothing drives) and outreach support (e.g., supporting an adult reading program).

​

What other activities aid in MAΣ’s mission?  Empowerment workshops, personal safety workshops, leadership development workshops, financial management workshops, personal care workshops, and more.

 

What is the purpose of the Orientation?  The Orientation allows you to get to know the leadership and some of our members.  We also learn about you: your community service activities, martial art background, profession, interest, how you can contribute to the mission of Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc., and why you desire to become a member.

What are the benefits of joining? 

  • To be a part of a national sisterhood of women who are sincere in their efforts to help all that are in need and will accept our help

What is the RUSH?  RUSH is the period in which candidates learn about Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc.  During this process, candidates must attend a mandatory orientation, submitted requested documents, and, if accepted, attend a 2-day workshop to learn about Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc.  Upon completion of the workshop, you will be given an exam and must pass with 80% or better to be considered for the RUSH period.

What is a Pinning Ceremony?  A Pinning Ceremony is a private ceremony with your future Sorors in which you are pinned – blouse pin – with our ceremonial pin that is worn throughout your RUSH Period.  During this ceremony, your mentor for the RUSH Period will be revealed.

What is a RUSH Period?  The RUSH Period is a 3 to 4-week process in which candidates are given specific assignments or projects and must complete them within the designated time period.  The candidates work collaboratively to complete each project.  After successful completion of the RUSH Period, you will be invited to crossover into Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc.  NOTE:  If you fail to complete the RUSH for non-emergency reasons, you will have to wait a year before reapplying for membership.  (Emergency reasons include death of a loved one, major illness, etc.)

What is a Crossover?  A Crossover is a private ceremony that officially joins you with the sisterhood of Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc.  Two weeks after your Crossover ceremony, you will be required to participate in a public Coming-Out Ceremony, and you may invite guests. 

​

What is a Coming-Out Ceremony?  A Coming-Out Ceremony is the public’s opportunity to witness your induction into Mu Alpha Sigma, Inc.

​

Can I skip the Coming-Out ceremony?  No.  All ceremonies are mandatory, and you will not receive your legal membership certificate until all steps are completed.

​

Is specific attire required for each ceremony?  Yes.

  • Pinning Ceremony – White plain tee-shirt and black bottoms (e.g., skirt, pants – no leggings, sweatpants, or shorts)

  • Crossover – Gold tee-shirt (provided at ceremony) and black bottoms (e.g., skirt, pants – no leggings, sweatpants, or sh0rts)

  • Coming-Out Ceremony – MAΣ purple tee-shirt and sash (provided at Crossover), black bottoms (e.g., skirt, pants – no leggings, sweatpants, or shorts)

Are there fees to join?  Yes. 

  • A one-time $100 Initiation Fee

  • $25 monthly dues (first month included in initiation fee)

  • $100 National dues – due June 15 of each year.

 

When are fees due?

  • Initiation Fee – due upon passing RUSH exam and prior to start of RUSH Period

  • Monthly Dues – 15th of each month

  • National Dues – June 15th of every year

 

What do the fees cover?

  • Initiation Fee – crossover and coming-out t-shirts, sash, notebook, MAΣ handbook, and SWAG items

  • Monthly Dues – local chapter expenses which include, but not limited to administrative expenses (i.e., salaries/benefits, etc.) and operational expenses (i.e., rent and utilities, website hosting, marketing and advertising, etc.)

  • National Dues – conferences, special events, national service mandates, etc.
